JI sets up fund to rebuild seminary

PESHAWAR: Former NWFP minister and provincial chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Sirajul Haq announced on Thursday that the seminary destroyed in Monday’s attack in Bajaur would be rebuilt, and launched a fund for this purpose and to support families of the people killed in the incident, with an initial party contribution of Rs 1 million. He made the announcement at a press conference at Markaz-e-Islami, after a meeting of the JI’s provincial executive council that decided to make the destroyed mosque and madrassa functional within three months. Haq said the JI had taken up the responsibility for support to victims’ families. He appealed to people to donate generously to the new fund, and claimed that the majority of victims belonged to poor families. The JI chief appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo moto action against the Bajaur “tragedy” to “prove that the judiciary does exist”. He criticised the president and the prime minister for “calling students terrorists”. staff report
